Year in Review: 2024
Where does all the time go? Into videogames! Now that it’s 2025, let’s look at the fun parts of 2024. Disappointment of the Year: Princess Peach Showtime! Having had a few months to ruminate on my thoughts on Princess Peach: Showtime!, I will confirm that Princess Peach: Showtime! is not a bad game, it is just not what I wanted. I wanted a dedicated action game starring Princess Peach and her…

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Open Beta (PC/Steam)
Session: https://youtu.be/KbAfLSoR9YA
The VF5REVO open beta is on now, for under a week I think. You get to mess around with the full game (not the 30th Anniversary Bundle version though which will be $50 instead of the base game's $20 and will have nearly* all the DLC from VF5US), for free, minus Tournament mode and character customization.
Single-player-wise, there's only Arcade mode--just like VF5 Ultimate Showdown. In fact, the main menu is pretty much the VF5US main menu. The graphics are super-sharp though and to my surprise it ran great on my 5-year-old-plus gaming laptop with settings on max.
*For some reason, in the game's small print there's a TEKKEN copyright notice--see second screenshot. There was TEKKEN 7 DLC added to VF5US--but that isn't included in the Anniversary Bundle, hasn't been announced in any form for REVO as far as I know, and sure isn't accessible in the Open Beta. Are they planning on adding it later? Or did they just forget this bit way down at the end of the small print?

Video Game Enthusiasts Lament that the Best Game of the Year Is Essentially Softcore Pornography
Tumblr media
"I mean, fuck's sake," says Derek "CuntBlaster97" Przybelski, a "gamer" from Salt Lake City speaking to Facts! News. "So many games came out in 2024. A new Tekken, a new Dragon Age, a Final Fantasy 7 remaster... and basically the only games worth playing are two goddamned co-op shooters, something that looks like what my solitaire-addicted grandma would get peer pressured into trying in an alley, and this fucking shit," gesturing to the 8-foot-tall F-cup goat person depicted on his computer's monitor. He proceeded to "run" a "dungeon," frowning and muttering angrily while having the most fun he's had since he was a child.
"It's basically fucked," says another video-gamer who wished to remain anonymous. "Like, this is the only actual good game that's released since September," referring to Saber Interactive's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. "I can't play that one though or I'll get banned from my girlfriend's Discord server for being a chud. But, like, fuck's sake, I can't play this one either. What if my parents see this?," gesturing to his "gaming avatar", a two-foot tall, 200-pound opossum woman which nobody over the age of 30 would be able to recognize as sexualized. "I have Steam Family Share with my little brother. If he sees this in his library I'm fucked... it's probably the only thing I'm gonna play for the next month though, at least until the next Abiotic Factor update."
"Atlyss is part of a larger trend," according to Vanessa Dobbins, a researcher at the University of Waterloo's Games Institute. "In the 90s with the advent of the M-rated video game, there was mostly a clear deliniation between good games, which were wholesome, and what we in the field call 'slop,' which was edgy and sexual -- which at the time meant anorexic women in leather. World of Warcraft by Blizzard Entertainment, being a good game yet edgy and sexual, was an outlier that caused changes in the behavior of Homo stupidens, the common video game developer. Now good games tried to become sexual in imitation of Warcraft, whereas slop games rejected sexuality in an attempt to seem superior to it. With Japanese gaming falling victim to anime in the mid 2000s, however, good games mostly became the territory of Homo stupidens basementii. This subspecies generally does not begin seeking a mate until relatively later in their life cycle, resulting in a shift in sexual games from the likes of Bayonetta towards more abstract sexual imagery, like the black slime from Changed, or in this case, ass-cheeks wobbling so hard that they should rip off."
An inside source at Unity Technologies, Inc., owners of the "Unity" video-game software which was used to create Atylss, told Facts! News that they are working hard with Microsoft Corporation and Sony Group to do as much as they can to prevent further good games from being released in the future. "This one slipped through the cracks, but we are working night and day to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again."

Here's the recap video on GETTING EVERY CHARACTER TO PURPLE in Tekken 7!
Thanks to the assignment from @jaguar-bomb, and apologies to all the actual red-ranks players I fought (over and over) while doing this project.
I might still rank up a few characters (I think I can get Kazuya a bit higher, and working on Heihachi) between now and when T8 drops, but this is close to my final score for T7 on Steam.

How do you feel about the fairness of matchmaking in Tekken 8? I know it mostly just comes down to the fact that there's a lot more people playing it than Tekken 7 had at the end of its cycle (plus cross play) but this shit feels like a STARK ass difference between the two games for me. Took me 700 hours to reach red ranks in t7 sweating my ass off then hit that general area in only 50 hours playing semi-casually in t8 lmao
i mean t7 had what like 7k players daily on steam. im assuming youre playing on pc, but the base was exclusively killers on pc combined with the fact that t7 was a much much less fun game for newer players. t8 is really great because smaller mistakes are punished far far less which is huge. and the ranked ft2 system along with the fact that you can lose your way to yellows (you dont lose points for losing in greens in t8) make it far more approachable up to red. reds when the shit hits the fan in this one, purples are filled with corny knowledge check strats, etc. its a lot more forgiving generally in a GOOD way imo i have a lot of thoughts on da new system

with the steam summer sale, i’ve done some calculations (i made a spreadsheet lmao) and I found the games I’d be up to buy my friends. This has proven to be pretty difficult considering that one of them is using a Fucking Mac. That said, they’re cool to just be an observer, which will save a little on my wallet.
Granblue Fantasy Versus: The game is cheap, but the DLC is... so much. Oh well, base game will suffice for now. It looks great, but otherwise I don’t know much.
Guilty Gear XX: An old-ass jank-ass game, but god I really do like Guilty Gear. Could be fun, and Axl’s goofy ass portrait image is from this game. Good for shooting the shit and losing our minds.
King of Fighters 98 and 2002: Honestly these two feel very similar (they’re even the same price.) I’ve been wanting to get better at KoF, and playing with some buddies is a good way to get further than dipping my toe. Also it has Rollback!
King of Fighters XIII: Some of the best gameplay in the series with some immaculate spritework, dragged down by a small-ish cast and some truly unfortunate background NPCs.
Skullgirls 2nd Encore: Amazing artstyle, brought down by a truly silly amount of panty shots and jiggling titties. The game’s great and it runs on Mac, but boy the hyper-sexualization can be a turn-off for some of my friends (including the one with the Mac. Pain).
Ultra Street Fighter IV: A very solid fighting game with some truly bananas timing. Probably one of the best all around games on my list.
Tekken 7: Right now, my number one pick just for the experience of learning how the fuck to 3D fighter. I’ve... technically watched Tekken Bloodlines, and Jack-7 is funny. Also my girlfriend likes Tekken and I want to get further into it.
Vampire Savior: An absolute classic but boy that game is not horny enough for its men. Every woman is either a model or B.B. Hood which is not great. But it’s probably fun. And it’s the cheapest thing on this list. $1.49 CAD is very enticing.
Rn i’m leaning toward Tekken. But Idk! I’ll have to talk about it with them. Special Mention to Them’s Fighting Herds for being playable on Mac without being indefensibly horny, Skullgirls.

fighting games thoughts
so im writing this waiting for my bus to go to work but I just don't really have anyone to dump my current obsessions so I'm just gonna write here instead. a few months ago I stumbled upon a tiktok video of the game guilty gear strive, but I didn't pay much attention except the fact that the game had some really interesting characters. now, fighting games were always a part of my life, it was a way of connecting with my father since he really enjoyed them too, a few that really stood out in my childhood were killer instinct, mortal kombat (a bunch of them, but mainly the ps3 one),
street fighter, the teen titans game on the cartoon network website, anyway, I loved them. but sometime in my life I stopped playing them and forgot about it, I always saw people playing mortal kombat when the 10 released, and then when the 11 released, but it never sparkled the joy in my to play again (also this thing was expensive as fuck). a few weeks ago I stumbled upon guilty gear strive again on my tiktok, but this time since I'm working I actually have the founds to afford a game on steam lol. I looked it up about some fighting games and got interested in a few of them.. guitly gear strive, tekken 7 and street fighter 5 or 6. now, even though street fighter has some characters I really loved like chunli, cammy, menat, juri, vega, it didn't really sparked anything in me.. tekken at the time was a little strange to me since the game is in 3d and the characters kinda looked like the sims ngl, so the option i had was guilty gear strive, it had some characters I thought it looked cool like bridget, testament, i-no, axl, anji, zato-1, may, anyway, you get the point, the game was also in 2d, which was a little more comfortable to me since all the experience I had was in 2d games, it had a big community of people that could teach me and play with me, so I bought that, the expanded editions to be fancy~. the game is really fun, it has some really cool machanics and its making me see fighting games in a way I never did before, all I did before was smash as much buttons as I could and hope my opponent didn't smashed the buttons before me, but now I'm starting to understand the fundamentals.. blocking, punishing, countering, frame data and all of that, I'm not good by any means, actually I started the online part at floor 6 and now im in floor 3, but thats part of the process I guess.. the problem is, I didn't stopped searching about other fighting games, and that made me regret a bit not buying tekken 7, the community was a lot bigger, it had characters that looked cool but not in a supernatural way, in a normal fighting way, like xiaoyu, lili, leo, katarina, asuka, eddy, hwoarang, lee, zafina, anyway, the list was gigantic, so after a week of debating if I should buy tekken or not I bought it, yesterday.. I didn't had any time at all to play since im in the end of my semester and working everyday on the afternoon (I'm fucking exhausted).. (I did a pause on writing, this is two nights after I started), so.. like I said I bought tekken 7 to try out since the idea of playing was really cool, and it is really cool, but like I said I don't have any fucking time ri3848u83.. but my semester is now ending and im a little free, so I'm using this time that I have to play Yakuza 0 and guilty gear strive, today I started playing with milia rage and I'm kinda obsessed.. a woman that can fight with her hair? that's peak pop diva queer icon to me.. she's like madonna of fighting games tbh.. I'm now really invested in playing more games, I bought the Yakuza collection on gog cause it was extremely cheap and mortal kombat x + 11 at 90% discount, gotta make the pennies I got as a salary count, after that I wanna play resident evil, I used to play re4 with my cousin he was kinda obsessed so we would play a whole weekend of re4 and tony hawk's lol.. I also wanna play devil may cry which is I game I used to own but never played.. anyway I just wanted to dump all these ideas somewhere and thought maybe this is the most appropriate place? I guess..

TEKKEN 8 - Reina Reveal & Gameplay Trailer
TEKKEN 8 will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on January 26, 2024.
First details on Reina via The PlayStation Blog:
A design that emphasizes the duality in Reina‘s character. We were eager to work with Ms. Mariko Shimazaki, who had previously contributed as a designer for characters like Kazumi and Josie for Tekken 7. We contacted her to handle the design during the early stages of brainstorming character concepts and keywords, despite giving her the challenging task of capturing a genuine martial artist’s appearance with a bold fighting style that blends elements of Taido and Mishima-style karate, while being a young woman who appears somewhat mysterious and has that duality. She delivered an exceptional design. Thanks to the design proposals we received from Ms. Shimazaki, the grand direction for Reina was clear from the beginning. In creating the 3D model, we worked on incorporating elements related to her hidden background and duality and how to shape it into an appealing design. So, please do keep an eye out for these aspects. Attacks that reflect her personality and acrobatic movement based on Taido Reina employs an acrobatic fighting style rooted in Taido, using swift and brutal techniques such as knife-hand strikes, eye pokes, and scratching that reflect her character. She utilizes a special movement called Sentai to close the distance quickly and launch rushes, while Unsoku allows her to deliver powerful attacks with agile footwork, demonstrating a speedy and aggressive combat approach. In addition, Reina has somehow acquired techniques like Wind God Fist and Spinning Demon, synonymous with the Mishima-style karate, and even exhibits a power fighter aspect, delivering powerful moves from the Heaven’s Wrath stance once used by Heihachi, who is now deceased. Her offensive capabilities near walls, in particular, are among the most potent of all characters. A design that emphasizes the duality in Reina‘s character. Tekken 8 adds newcomer Reina
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for Tekken 8 revealing newcomer Reina as a playable character.
“Reina was a character conceived during Tekken 7’s story development a decade ago,” Tekken 8 director Kohei Ikeda said in a PlayStation Blog post. “She plays a vital role in Tekken 8’s story, The Dark Awakens. Despite her fashionable and charming appearance, she exudes a charismatic sense of evil, reflecting her character’s duality in both personality and fighting style.”
Here is more on Reina, via Ikeda:
Attacks That Reflect Her Personality and Acrobatic Movement Based on Taido
Reina employs an acrobatic fighting style rooted in Taido, using swift and brutal techniques such as knife-hand strikes, eye pokes, and scratching that reflect her character. Reina is a character that emphasizes duality in various aspects. To create a distinct counterpart to the powerful Mishima-style karate, we chose Taido as the second fighting style. Taido is known for its graceful and speedy movements, with sharp and agile attacks. When producing Reina’s Taido techniques, we collaborated with the renowned expert, Mr. Tetsuji Nakano, who has won the Taido World Championships four times. Mr. Nakano is not only knowledgeable in Taido but also in various other martial arts. His advice on brutal techniques helped bring out the distinctive features and personality in Reina’s movements even more.
A Design that Emphasizes the Duality in Reina’s Character
We were eager to work with Ms. Mariko Shimazaki, who had previously contributed as a designer for characters like Kazumi and Josie for Tekken 7. We contacted her to handle the design during the early stages of brainstorming character concepts and keywords, despite giving her the challenging task of capturing a genuine martial artist’s appearance with a bold fighting style that blends elements of Taido and Mishima-style karate, while being a young woman who appears somewhat mysterious and has that duality. In creating the 3D model, we worked on incorporating elements related to her hidden background and duality and how to shape it into an appealing design. So, please do keep an eye out for these aspects.
Tekken 8 is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam on January 26, 2024.
